RNU Loch Garman POW Activism
Today members of RNU Loch Garman took to the streets and estates of Gorey Co. Wexford and distributed over 1000 copies of ” Support The POWs”. There was a positive reaction from the local people who were all very concerned to learn of the draconian and brutal treatment of Republican Prisoners in Maghaberry Jail. The activists in attendance explained the August 10th agreement, the benefits to the daily life of the prisoners if it were enacted and the regressive strategy of the prison authorities in their continuing opposition to it.
RNU member and former Cogús POW Robbie Kearns on the leaflet drop:
“The cumann were discussing some of the more recent issues affecting republican POWs and we agreed that one of the most urgent was not within the jail but existed externally. The issue being a lack of public knowledge and general misconceptions of what is taking place in the prisons throughout Ireland. Being a former prisoner of Portlaoise jail, I know that the wretched conditions POWs endure and the punitive measures of the prison staff would repulse those that could see them first hand. ”
“While republican political prisoners do their utmost to highlight the draconian nature of the prison administration, through statements carried online, various prisoner magazines and newspapers, the onus falls on us, the republican activists outside the jails. To highlight and support the various struggles occurring within the Maghaberry, Portlaoise and Hydebank. As such, I would encourage everyone with genuine concern for the human rights of incarcerated republicans to aid in this endeavour.”
